Welcome to the Falkland Islands Independent Award Centre

At the heart of youth development in one of the world’s most beautiful, remote and inspiring landscapes, our Independent Award Centre proudly delivers the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in the Falkland Islands. We provide young people with the opportunity to challenge themselves, discover their potential, and grow in confidence through a globally recognised programme of personal development. Whether hiking across the beautiful terrain, volunteering in the local community, taking part in physical recreation or building new skills, our participants gain lifelong experiences that prepare them for the future.

Join us on this incredible journey of adventure, resilience, and achievement!

What is the international Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework for non-formal education and learning, which challenges young people to dream big, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world. Through developing universal and transferable skills, increasing their fitness levels, cultivating a sense of adventure and volunteering in their community, the Award inspires young people to take control, make their own choices and build their own unique programmes, helping them to find their purpose, passion and place in the world.

How do our participants achieve their bronze award?
To earn the Bronze Award, participants complete a personal programme of activities in four sections over a set period of time:

  • Voluntary service: Give back to our community by helping others (minimum 3 months).

  • Physical recreation: Get active and improve your fitness through a regular sport or activity (minimum 3 months).

  • Skills: Develop a new talent or build on an existing interest (minimum 3 months).

  • Adventurous Journey: Plan, train for, and complete a two-day, one-night adventurous journey in a team.

One of the Volunteering, Physical, or Skills sections must be done for an extra 3 months, making one of them a 6-month commitment.

Who are our community partners?

Adventurous Journey Supervisor: Falklands Outdoors https://falklandsoutdoors.com/

We are proud to partner with Falklands Outdoors, a locally owned and family-run company renowned for delivering exceptional outdoor experiences across the Falkland Islands. Specialising in kayaking, hiking, climbing, and bespoke wildlife tours, they offer unparalleled expertise in navigating the rugged and remote landscapes that define our Adventurous Journey expeditions.

With a commitment to eco-friendly practices, Falklands Outdoors ensures a personalised and safe adventure for every participant. Their experience in the field provides comprehensive pre-trip training, hands-on supervision during the journey, and thoughtful debriefing sessions to foster reflection and growth. This partnership enriches the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award experience, allowing our young people to engage deeply with the natural world while developing resilience and teamwork.

Without the support of Falklands Outdoors, our Adventurous Journey section would not be the transformative experience it is today.

Who are our adult volunteers?

At our Independent Award Centre, we are proud to be supported by a dedicated network of over 35 adult volunteers from across the Falkland Islands community. These individuals generously give their time, expertise, and encouragement to help our young people succeed in their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award journey.

Our community partners play a vital role—signing off physical activities, mentoring skills development, offering volunteering placements, and supporting participants through their Adventurous Journey. Their involvement not only enriches the Award experience but also strengthens the connection between young people and the wider community.

We are deeply grateful for this ongoing support. Without it, the opportunities and achievements we celebrate through the Award simply wouldn’t be possible.
