Student Leadership Team

Our Student Leadership Team plays an integral part in driving the culture of the school. When given the opportunity, young people can have a profound positive impact on their school and wider communities.  We want to give our students the confidence and skills to lead positive change at FICS and begin their journey to be future leaders within The Falkland Islands and beyond.

By being part of the Student Leadership Team, students will;

Work in partnership with staff to improve learning, teaching and well-being for all at FICS

Develop leadership skills through a variety of inspiring and challenging projects

Study towards recognised student leader qualifications

Engage the wider community

Gain essential skills, enabling them to be successful in Further and Higher Education and to secure aspirational career paths

Be a voice for every FICS student

Student Leader Expectations

To make sure every child feels safe and welcome in school

To support students to feel ready and prepared for secondary school

To build good working relationships with staff

To want to make a positive impact on the school and be involved in decision making

To work well in a team

To be polite, mature, responsible and always kind

To model the school values of Respect, Resilience and Curiosity

To support the Senior Leadership Team in their role around school and at school events

Student Leadership Accreditation (SLA)

The SLA was developed by students, for students, in partnership with teachers, schools and employers. Together they identified ten key skills that young people need to be successful leaders, and grouped these into three themes:

Developing myself

Contributing to the community

Working with others

These skills and themes are grouped into a self assessment framework, which can be adapted to reflect the schools' context and ethos. Students assess themselves against this framework and then actively seek opportunities to advance themselves and gather evidence to showcase their new skills in a portfolio. Students can work towards the SLA at three levels; bronze, silver and gold. Unlike other awards, the SLA is moderated by students' peers as well as by SSAT, ensuring the process both reinforces and rewards meaningful student leadership.

The SLA was developed by students, for students, and it is this focus on the individual that makes the award so popular. As well as the prestige of accreditation, the process that students go through in becoming accredited is of great benefit. This process encourages students to:

Critically self reflect on their skills as leaders

Work collaboratively to plan how they will meet the criteria and evidence it

Organise and structure their evidence

Peer assess others' work against criteria

Aspire to take on increasingly challening leadership responsibilities

Regardless of whether your child aspires to be part of the Student Leadership Team, every child has a crucial role to play in setting the culture for the school through displaying the school values of Respect, Resilience and Curiosity. Every student has the opportunity to be a leader through their actions and the example they set to others.
